About Jose Juan (JJ) Hermina Perez, MD

Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine

After attending George Washington University for his undergraduate degree, Jose returned home to Puerto Rico for medical school. During medical school he developed a social media app to enhance interpersonal connections while eliminating the potentially addictive components of other social media apps. He has volunteered extensively, including serving in disaster relief response coalitions following the earthquakes in spring 2020, and participating in volunteer drives to improve access and education regarding vaccinations during the pandemic. Jose spent time during the pandemic researching the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on medical students. Applying what he learned from this research, he created an initiative to include mental health awareness in the first year of the medical student curriculum. Jose also enjoys playing sports, including volleyball and indoor soccer, in addition to cooking traditional Puerto Rican and Cuban food.
