Fellowships after Residency

MGH and McLean are dedicated to training outstanding clinical and academic psychiatrists. After completing residency, many of our graduates decide to continue working at MGH, at McLean, or in the larger Harvard system.

In addition to clinical positions, our graduates are very successful in winning competitive national awards to fund research projects. Harvard also provides direct research support for those interested in pursuing academic careers. Some of this funding is available during the residency or starting immediately after graduation. Listed below are some research and clinical fellowships available during the PGY-4 or PGY-5 years.

Research Fellowships

HMS Department of Psychiatry

Dupont-Warren Fellowship

HMS Foundation Grants

Each year several foundations invite HMS faculty and postdocs to apply for their fellowships and grants, which serve as critical funding at the early stages of a research career. Interested investigators must first apply for the HMS nomination through the HMS Foundation Funds, and a committee will select the final candidates to submit applications to the foundations. The deadline to submit applications for the HMS Foundation Grants is October 15, 2015, unless otherwise noted. Awards include:

  • AXA Research Fund Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • Bullock-Wellman Postdoctoral Fellowship.
  • Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Clinical Investigator Award
  • Dana Foundation Program in Brain and Immuno-imaging
  • Ellison New Scholars Program in Aging
  • Macy Foundation Faculty Scholars Program
  • Mary Kay Innovative/Translational Cancer Research Award
  • NIH Early Independence Award
  • Packard Fellowships in Science and Engineering
  • Rita Allen Faculty Scholars Program

McLean Hospital Research Fellowships

Fellowships are available for post-graduate research through the McLean Hospital Office of the President, and are selected each year in the spring. For more information click here or contact Pete Paskevich.

Frazier Research Institute and the Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder Program Fellowship

Provides two years of funding to support research on psychotic disorders. The fellowship is designed to prepare trainees for a career in academic psychiatry and psychiatric research. Psychiatrists who are in their fourth year of residency training or have graduated from residency in the past year are eligible to apply. Training is provided mainly through participation in research, with additional teaching and supervision by senior faculty members, and opportunities for participation in clinical care of patients with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and related conditions. Trainees will be exposed to clinical, neuroimaging, genetic, and preclinical research. In addition, trainees will receive guidance on research ethics, grant-writing, and publications and they will be expected to apply for external funding during the course of the Fellowship.

Provides one year of funding to support research and travel expenses. Can be awarded concurrently with Kaplen or Dupont-Warren Fellowships.

Harvard Catalyst KL2 MeRIT Award

The KL2 MeRIT program provides advanced training in clinical and translational research to senior fellows and junior faculty from all health professions represented by Harvard Catalyst, including medicine, dentistry, and nursing. KL2 awardees will pursue a mentored research project in their area of expertise. It is expected that the research performed within the KL2 program will provide the basis for an independent NIH award (e.g., K23, KO8, or RO1).

In addition to the formal programs described above, most research programs at both MGH and McLean are funded with numerous grants that can be used to support the early careers of interested physician researchers.
