Welcome to the MGH/McLean Hospital Psychiatry Residency Program! You are entering psychiatry at an incredibly exciting and critical time in our field. New scientific discoveries and clinical care models are continually transforming our understanding and treatment of mental illness. Our tremendous impact on individual and population health and well-being is increasingly recognized and our services are in high demand. At MGH/McLean, we hope to foster your enthusiasm and passion for psychiatry and the patients, communities, and systems we serve. Our mission is to train the next generation of psychiatrist leaders who will contribute to local, national, and world mental health through their provision of exceptional and compassionate patient care; meaningful engagement in scientific discovery; expert education of patients, multidisciplinary learners, and systems; and service to diverse communities. We provide a rigorous clinical education in a highly supportive environment, coupled with meaningful opportunities in research, teaching, and advocacy. The program is committed to nurturing and promoting a diverse physician workforce that will promote health and social equity in our local communities and beyond.
Our residents are exposed to diverse clinical settings across MGH and McLean, two world-renowned hospitals at the forefront of modern psychiatric practice. Residents receive expert teaching, supervision, and mentorship from devoted faculty members and are encouraged to pursue innovative, individualized learning plans that honor their specific interests and goals. They may choose to participate in specialized programs for research, medical education, and psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as in a broad range of interest groups that include neuropsychiatry, global psychiatry, public and community psychiatry, community advocacy. The program includes a comprehensive approach to resident wellness and emphasizes resident engagement and leadership in program change and growth. Residents are integrated into an inclusive community of highly enthusiastic and supportive faculty, alumni, and other trainees. They become lifelong learners and members of the MGH/McLean family.
