About Maria Camila Velez Florez, MD

I am a PGY1 at the MGH/McLean Psychiatry residency program. I was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia. After graduating from medical school at Universidad del Rosario in 2017, I worked as a general physician in emergency medicine and critical care for 3 years. Then, I had the opportunity of working as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Radiology Department.

During my research fellowship, I used mixed methods in studies related to patient and family-centered care and medical education. I developed multiple pilot studies to investigate the use of mind-body therapies in patients and families undergoing interventional radiology procedures. I also supported research projects in the additive manufacturing -3D printing- team (CHAMP). We were awarded the National Science Foundation grant, to develop and deploy innovative technology solutions to meet frontline medical shortages related to COVID-19. To support these efforts, I invented a transparent origami facemask with the collaboration of CHAMP and was awarded grant funding by the National Capital Consortium for Pediatric Device Innovation. I had the opportunity to be the Principal Investigator for this project and execute a pilot study to evaluate the use of the mask for the assessment of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. In medical education, I was involved in different projects for curriculum development, including professional identity formation and cultural diversity, and artificial intelligence-driven tools for precision learning.

As a PSTP resident, I plan to continue using mixed methods to study cognition, behavior, and brain aspects of mental health disorders in children, and related topics such as consultation-liaison, mind-body therapies, education, and diversity and inclusion. My goal is to pursue research that includes the study of both psychosocial and biological mechanisms of underlying diseases that connect mind and body.
